Managing Director

Gwawr has been with Portal since 2010, joining after spending more than fifteen years teaching in large secondary schools. During her classroom career she held a number of posts including Assistant Head, Head of Department and Key Skills Coordinator.

She is passionate about helping achieve improvement across all types of teaching for learners of all abilities and aims for Portal to provide equal quality of training provision in both English and Welsh.


Nerys Evans

Director of Strategy

Nerys is a former member of the National Assembly for Wales for Mid and West Wales with extensive experience in educational policy development. She was spokesperson for Education, Skills and Lifelong Learning for Plaid Cymru during the One Wales Labour – Plaid Coalition Government and was a member of the Assembly’s Enterprise and Learning Committee. She was Plaid Cymru’s Director of Policy and authored their 2011 Assembly Manifesto. She was appointed by the Welsh Government to be an Education Commissioner in Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council and afterwards served on the Ministerial performance board in the County. She has recently served as a member of the First Minister’s Commission on Public Service Governance and Delivery (The Williams Commission) and is a member of Ofcom’s Advisory Committee for Wales, chair of ACT’s Governance Committee and Director of Deryn Public Affairs Consultancy.

At Portal, Nerys’ work is focused on ensuring that our provision is at the forefront of educational policy developments across the UK.

Sarah Evans

School Relations Manager

Sarah joined Portal in September 2015 after ten years teaching Business, ICT and Vocational subjects in secondary schools in both Wales and England. During her time as a teacher, she held a number of leadership positions including Leader of Learning and Student Participation at Patchway Community College, PGCE mentor for UWE Trainee Business Teachers and most recently as Lead Practitioner at Tonypandy Community College.


Aled Davies

School Relations Manager

Aled joined Portal in September 2016. He began his career as a Secondary Welsh Language teacher before moving on to work in the Language Planning sector for many years. He grabbed the chance to establish a Welsh Language Community Enterprise in his local area and was Director of Menter Bro Teifi for over four years. He was then offered the post of Welsh Language Director for the National Statistics Office in Newport before taking up a roll as a Senior Officer in the Private Sector Unit of the Welsh Language Board in Cardiff where he worked for over five years.

Before Aled joined Portal he worked as a TV Producer for eight years where he was responsible for bringing all kinds of programmes to the screen for broadcasters such as the BBC, S4C and Channel 4.

Aled is a family man and loves bringing up his two young sons. He’s also a keen football and rugby fan and enjoys running and keeping fit.


Claire Lane

School Relations Manager

Claire joined Portal in June 2016 after fifteen years teaching History in large secondary schools in the South Wales area. During her time as a teacher, she held a number of leadership posts including Head of History and Head of Faculty for Humanities and Business at Porthcawl Comprehensive School and Assistant Head teacher at a school in South West Wales.

Whole school leadership responsibilities have included lead for Teaching and Learning, PGCE and NQT mentoring, cross-curricular Literacy, Numeracy and ICT and implementation of the Welsh Baccalaureate.


Ynyr Roberts

Marketing and Design Coordinator

Ynyr joined team Portal late September 2016. He has worked in the design and marketing industry since graduating from Sheffield Hallam University in 2002. Most of the past years working freelance for companies such as BBC, WJEC, Cytûn and S4C to name a few.

Born and raised in rural Snowdonia, north Wales but now living in Cardiff, Ynyr adores music of all sorts, and is a keen follower of Welsh language music in particular, he is one half of the alt-folk group Brigyn. He worked to manage and set up the community music label Gwynfryn Cymunedol, and is a board member at Eos (The Broadcasting Rights Agency).

Ynyr is a family man with two young children. He is an avid follower of football and likes to keep fit by cycling and running.

Lee Price

Sweet* Project Officer

Lee is experienced within education and training having worked in all three sectors including further education colleges, training providers, schools and numerous prisons throughout England and Wales. He has held various positions within the industry including alternative curriculum teaching, managing operations and quality assurance. In addition to his current role Lee is also an ‘A’ grade standards verifier and Team Leader for Pearson.

He is an active member of his community and has coached mini rugby within Pontypridd RFC since 2010.

Janice Hart

Qualifications Manager

Janice has been with Portal since 2014. Prior to starting her journey with Portal, Janice undertook a number of roles within the work Based Learning Sector which included; assessing, quality assurance and delivering training within the Public Service sector.  She previously worked for Service Schools Education in Germany before moving back to the UK where she managed a Foundation Phase setting in London.

Management and education specialist areas: Open distance learning; Learning Technology; HRD and Quality Management – Systems Thinking and Practice. Vocational Education Training (VET) – Educational Assessment.


Jonathan Watkins-Stuart

Management Assessor

Jonathan is responsible for working with Learners who are undertaking  their ILM level 4 and Level 5 Leadership and Management qualification along with essential skills Wales literacy, numeracy and ICT. He provides support on the qualification, undertaking relevant assessment methods to work towards completion. Jonathan also works on the Moodle system, enrolling learners, working with resources and our online assessment process.

Beth James

Management Assessor

Beth joined Portal in January 2015. Beth attended Ysgol Gyfun Glantaf in Cardiff and went on to study a BEd in Secondary Welsh.  Beth worked with children and young adults with special educational needs before starting her teaching career in Maesteg Comprehesive in 2002.  Beth lead the Welsh transition programme for the cluster of schools, worked on Bilingualism policies and for the WJEC on moderating KS2 and 3 levelled portfolios. Beth is passionate about the Welsh language and raising standards in teaching and learning, and is excited to work with a range of Welsh language learners on the ILM qualification.


Samantha Scott

Management Assessor

Samantha held leadership positions since her first year in teaching from Director of KS3 to Curriculum Manager. Over this time she wrote content for an interactive resources company, worked with partnership schools facilitating best practice forums, coaching a number of trainee teacher and NQTs as well as leading a technology department.


Cathryn Ings

Management Assessor

Cathryn trained as a journalist in Llanelli and has worked for the Western Mail in Cardiff and South Wales Evening Post in Swansea. Cathryn went on to become editor of her hometown newspaper – the Carmarthen Journal in 2008.

In 2012, Cathryn left the newspaper industry to become business manager at a leading third sector organisation which promotes the Welsh language and community development. She has delivered media training to several tourism businesses in Carmarthenshire.

Dawn Vanstone

Dawn has held a number of positions within the Training sector, beginning her career in the industry in 1996, Dawn’s passion for vocational qualifications grew from her own experience as an Apprenticeship candidate herself. This developed into an opportunity to become an Assessor. Since the start of her work based learning journey Dawn has enhanced her skills through a variety of roles including lead verifier, Quality manager and in the last 10 years Team manager for groups of Assessors and Verifiers delivering a variety of routes including Business Administration, Customer Service, Health and Social Care and Childcare.


Andrea Matthews

Management Assessor

Andrea joined Portal Training in May 2016 with experience of working in Work Based Learning over the past 17 years. She has had numerous roles including Assessor, Internal Quality Assurer, External Quality Assurer and most recently Apprenticeship Performance Manager for WBL contracts in England and Wales. Andrea has achieved a number of qualifications in the field of Management and Leadership including the Higher Apprenticeship ILM Level 5 in Management and Leadership and ILM Level 7 in Strategic Leadership. She has delivered Management and Leadership apprenticeships in a variety of settings including Education, Accountancy, Digital Marketing and most recently with a group of apprentices in Swansea City Football Club.

Gwenno Llwyd Jones

Management Assessor

Gwenno Jones joined Portal in January 2016 as a Welsh Medium Management Assessor having previously taught at Ysgol Cymer Rhonddda in her role as a Head of Physics.  Gwenno graduated as a Bachelor in Civil and Environmental Engineering (BEng) in 2010 from Cardiff University. As a Science teacher, Gwenno led Numeracy initiatives within the department and mentored PGCE Science students during their school placements. Gwenno is passionate about travel and keeping fit, she enjoys running and mountain walking on the weekends and hopes to compete in this year’s Snowdon Race in July.


Aimee Jones

IQA / Management Assessor

Aimee joined the Portal team in September 2015 following 14 years in secondary education.  A qualified ICT teacher, Aimee has experience teaching a wide range of abilities across all of the key stages and has also delivered Business Studies at GCSE and A Level.  Aimee has held leadership roles for the majority of her career, as Head of Department for 7 years and as ICT co-ordinator, leading on whole school ICT issues.  In addition, Aimee has been a mentor to several Initial Teacher Trainees and provided IT training courses and support for colleagues.  Aimee was also actively involved in many extra-curricular projects including running the DofE wards and leading oversees expeditions.

Danielle Hall - photo

Danielle Hall

Data Administrator

Danielle Hall began as a Data Administrator at Portal Training at the beginning of 2015. Previous to this, Danielle completed a BTEC Art course at Willows High Six Form and Working Skills course at ACT whilst working part time as a custodian at Cardiff University. Danielle is part of the ILM team providing secretarial and managerial support. She’s excited to be undertaking a business administration course whilst in this role.

Outside of work Danielle likes to socialise with friends and also likes taking part in athletics.


Jo Norton


Jo’s interest in Leadership and Management started when she first graduated from Bangor University and secured a role in the Leadership and Management field.  This deviated somewhat from her early career plans to teach modern languages, however the interest and passion for teaching and learning has endured.

Jo has continually developed her leadership and management skills through a variety of job roles both in industry and education.  For the past 10 years Jo has worked within the training sector to include in teaching, assessment, curriculum development and quality assurance roles.

In 2016 Jo achieved the MSc in Leadership and Management and is currently pursuing opportunities for Doctoral level study.

Debbie Downes

Management Assessor

Debbie pursued a professional career in Finance and Project Management, before returning to education as a mature student. Debbie graduated from the University of South Wales with an undergraduate degree in Business and Enterprise, a PGCE in Post-compulsory Education and Training, and an MSc in Leadership and Management. She went on to lecture there at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, with areas of particular interest including Leadership and Management Theory, Personal and Professional Development and Organisational Behaviour.

Debbie joined Portal in September 2016. Debbie is striving to use her academic knowledge, industry and teaching experience to help a range of learners develop their own professional practices and achieve their individual goals.

Debbie has a passion for learning and believes that determination brings many rewards. Debbie has two young daughters, enjoys reading, watching live music and spending time outdoors.


Huw Evans

Management Assessor

Huw joined Portal in November 2016 as a Welsh Medium Management Assessor having previously worked for the Education Department in Conwy as a Physical Literacy Coordinator. Since graduating in 2006 Huw has held a number of roles in the education sector in North West Wales including a period as the Head of Geography at Ysgol y Berwyn, Y Bala.

During his career to date, Huw has coordinated and led a number of projects to improve pupil health and well-being in primary and secondary schools all around Gwynedd and Conwy.

Huw is passionate about supporting others to achieve and has been heavily involved in developing and coordinating regional and national youth volunteering schemes.

In his free time, Huw enjoys spending time with his family being active in the great outdoors.

Gwenan Rosser

Management Assessor

Gwenan joined Portal in February 2017 after holding a number of positions within both the Education and Business sectors. She began her career as a Secondary Physical Education teacher where leadership posts included Head of Department, KS4 Pastoral Leader, Inclusion and Attendance Coordinator, PGCE mentor and Assistant Head teacher. During this time she was also a GCSE PE moderator and A Level examiner for the WJEC.

After 15 years of teaching, Gwenan returned to study gaining a MAR Diploma in Reflexology and has since worked with Cardiff City FC and other sport professionals as part of their Rehabilitation teams. She was also part of the successful 2010 Ryder Cup working for the Assistant Director of Team Europe.

Recent years have seen Gwenan as an Operations Manager with a Sports Tour Operator, working mainly with professional football clubs in Spain, Portugal and the Netherlands. She was also responsible for the setting and implementing the company’s Tours H&S department policies, awarding them their STF accreditation within the industry, and was their Lead Auditor for all Risk Management Procedures and Assessments.

Gwenan is looking forward to her new role with Portal and establishing new partnership with our learners.

Clare Jeffries

Operations Manager

Clare joined Portal in July 2016 after 13 years working within Further educational establishments and Work Based Learning. During her career Clare has held a number of Leadership roles such as Operation Manager Roles and Senior Management roles, leading departments. Clare strongly believes in providing the companies that she works for with an European dimension and as a result is a member of the Erasmus+ VET Consultation group. Clare is passionate about enhancing learning and partnership working to ensure learners have an outstanding learning experience.
